#Just Because… Surbiton Hockey Club
Designing for Community: Our Collaboration with Surbiton Hockey Club
At Murray Fishpool, we believe great design isn’t just about how a space looks—it’s about how it works, how it feels, and how it supports the people who use it every day.
We’re proud to be working with Surbiton Hockey Club—an organisation we’re delighted to sponsor—on a complete internal remodel of their clubhouse. But this isn’t just another project. For us, it’s personal.
Our co-founder, Paul, has been a member of the club for over 25 years. He’s spent countless weekends there as a player, supporter, and parent. He understands the clubhouse not just as a physical structure, but as a social anchor for the club—a place that welcomes everyone, from junior players and their families to elite athletes and long-standing members. Our vision for the redesign is rooted in respect for the club’s history and achievements, while creating a space that feels ready for the next generation.
The project involves a full redesign of the existing 2,000-square-foot bar and club room. We’re transforming it into one cohesive, open-plan space that feels warm, relaxed, and highly flexible. While it functions as a single inviting environment, it can also be subdivided into three distinct zones—each available to hire independently. This not only adds versatility but also opens up new revenue opportunities for the club.
Designing for such a dynamic space means thinking on multiple levels. During the day, it needs to feel comfortable and informal—a space where members can grab a coffee, hold a meeting, or simply relax while their children train. In the evenings, it shifts into a lively, sociable bar—ideal for teams to gather, decompress, and connect after matches. And when hired out for private events, it must feel polished, professional, and welcoming to guests who may have no connection to the club.
Our design solution focuses on creating an atmosphere that’s both functional and characterful. We’re using natural materials, carefully layered lighting, and considered detailing to ensure the space can adapt fluidly without losing its sense of identity. Just as importantly, we’re building in opportunities to celebrate the club’s legacy—whether through subtle displays of memorabilia or architectural nods to its long-standing presence in the community.
We look forward to sharing more as the project progresses. For now, we’re honoured to be helping Surbiton Hockey Club shape the next chapter in its story—creating a space that reflects its energy, its inclusivity, and the proud history of one of the UK’s leading hockey institutions.
